Four Cars, One Stand, and a Lot of Polish: Our Classic Motor Show Adventure

Our journey to the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show officially kicked off on 30th May 2025, when an email from the event organisers landed in our inbox offering us a club stand. After briefly pretending to “think it over,” we accepted faster than a Rover Mini hitting 60mph downhill with a tailwind.

From that moment, the hunt for four show-worthy vehicles began. We knew that for our first year, we wanted to celebrate the stars of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. After many conversations, debates, and at least one emotional “that car has to be there,” we finally settled on our fantastic four.

Then came the task of designing the stand—because if we were going to do this, we were going to do it properly. First on the list was a club hub: a cosy gazebo stocked with merchandise. We also wanted a seating area where visitors could relax, chat with our stand team, and share their stories of the opening ceremony (or, in many cases, their stories of Minis they once owned and regretted selling).

Next up was the front desk—a place to welcome people in with a smile, a friendly wave, and possibly a cup of tea if we’d thought to bring a kettle. We also added a video display to show highlights from our past events, plus four display boards: two all about the Commonwealth Car Club and our members, and two proudly dedicated to our sponsor, Best of British MG Rover Spares.

Before we knew it, November arrived at full throttle. On Thursday 6th November, we set to work building the stand, and by midday the cars began rolling in. Then came the polishing… oh, the polishing. Let’s just say if shiny paintwork was an Olympic sport, we’d have taken gold.

The show opened on Friday 7th November, launching three very long, very busy, and very unforgettable days. Yes, it was tiring. And yes, by Sunday we were running mostly on caffeine and pure enthusiasm. But being part of such a huge event—our first as a club—was an absolute honour and an experience we’ll be talking about for years to come.

Family Friendly Club Stand

Visitors to the Classic Motor Show 2025 were given a real treat when they stopped by our stand. Not only could they admire our display, but they also had the chance to climb inside a 1999 Rover Mini Paul Smith Edition. It quickly became a fan favourite, with people of all ages eager to take a seat, snap a photo, and experience a piece of motoring history up close.

Club Show Cars

We were proud to showcase four stunning cars on our stand, each one with a special connection to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. These vehicles weren’t just eye catching classics, they were part of a historic moment, and visitors were thrilled to see them up close. Our first car is a beautifully kept 1992 Rover Mini Mayfair, owned by Jonathan Cotterill. Next to it sat a timeless 1990 Rover 416. Our third car, a 1999 Rover Mini Paul Smith Edition owned by Ciaran Gaynor, drew plenty of attention with its unique styling and vibrant personality. Rounding off the display was a sleek 1999 MG F, proudly owned by Grosvenor Lucas, which added a sporty flair to the stand. Each car had its own story and charm, and together they attracted a huge amount of interest throughout the event. It was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate their role in the Games and to share that excitement with everyone who visited.

Club Sponsor | Best of British MG Rover Spares

Our club sponsor has always been an incredible supporter of the Commonwealth Car Club, and this year was no exception. We wanted to create two eye-catching displays showcasing parts for MG/Rover and British Leyland vehicles, something that would celebrate the Best of British engineering and spark conversation among enthusiasts. When we approached Best of British, they immediately stepped forward with enthusiasm, generously supplying a fantastic range of parts for both displays. Thanks to their support, our stand attracted a huge amount of interest from visitors throughout the weekend. Many stopped to reminisce, ask questions, and admire the quality and heritage of the components on show. Their contribution truly elevated our stand, and we’re extremely grateful for their continued backing and commitment to our club. Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show 2025 | Commonwealth Car Club Stand Highlights

Here are the highlights from our club’s stand at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show 2025. This year marked a very special milestone for us, as it was the first time the Commonwealth Car Club had its own stand at the show and what an unforgettable debut it was. We proudly showcased four stunning vehicles: a 1992 Rover Mini Mayfair, a 1990 Rover 416, a Rover Mini Paul Smith Edition, and a 1999 MG F. Each of these cars played a memorable role in the opening ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, making them not only beautiful classics but meaningful pieces of modern automotive history. Being part of such a prestigious event for the very first time was a true honour for our club. The interest, enthusiasm, and support from visitors were overwhelming, and it was a joy to share the stories behind these iconic cars with everyone who stopped by.

BIG PRIZE GIVEAWAY

In October, the Commonwealth Car Club launched its very first competition: The Big Prize Giveaway. It was an exciting milestone for us, and the response from our members and followers was fantastic. Up for grabs was an amazing bundle, two tickets to the Classic Motor Show at the NEC, two of our purple club jackets, and a pair of our brand-new club stickers.

The winner was chosen completely at random during a live draw, adding a bit of suspense and fun to the announcement. Luck was on the side of Mike Johnson, who became the first-ever winner of our club competition.

Mike joined us at the Classic Motor Show on the Saturday, where he proudly collected his prizes in person.
